Buda and Pest on opposite sides of the Danube is now a beautiful, sophisticated city. Lots of Art Nouveau which is referred to here as the masculine version as opposed to the more flowery feminine Czech style. On to the famous Hungarian plains or Puszta where the local men perform dare- devil horseback rides. Great shopping, markets and food.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1:  Transfer to the 4* hotel located in the city centre ( included)  Afternoon free

Optional musical programme: folklore, classical, opera

Dinner Strudel House ( included).

It opened in 2007 with the concept of offering a wide range of strudels some with unusual fillings (chicken, foie gras, salmon). Of course the traditional tastes (cottage cheese, apple, sour cherry, poppy seed) are also available.

Day 2: Guided tour ( included) by Art Nouveau specialist, travelling by bus.  Visit excellent examples of Hungarian Art Nouveau buildings not usually open to the public . Museum of Applied Arts (incl. entrance fee) Visit the Geological Institute of Hungary

Lunch stop visiting the House of Hungarian Art Nouveau: Entrance fee, coffee, cake, conversation about art nouveau and its trends Visit some of the sights of Budapest like Heroes’ Square,  Andrássy Street, Basilica

Visit the famous Postal Savings Bank (only outside) From the top of a building view the roof of the Postal Savings Bank

Afterwards – Free time – Turkish baths, markets, shopping.

Day 3:    Meet your guide and go to the Castle district on foot  Travel with the Budapest  Funicular up to the Castle Hill National Gallery (entrance fee, local guidance)   Walk in the Castle district (Fishermen’s Bastion, Matthias- Church)

In the afternoon free time   – shopping, markets.    Evening  opera  Der Rosenkavalier ( optional ) There are 7 of us going to this

Day 4:    A full day sightseeing by bus with highlight Puszta horses , Gypsy music , lunch & guide ( included.)

Day 5:   Szentendre artists village – a small baroque town at the gate of the Danube Bend, at the meeting place of the river Danube and the Pilis hills, in a beautiful natural setting.
Szentendre is known as the town of living art due to its artist colony of international renown, and its museums and galleries. With its well preserved, distinctive 18th-century townscape, the town centre is a group of heritage buildings unique in Hungary.

This tour is optional. You will be using public transport, train & boat.

Farewell dinner

Day 6:   Transfer to station or airport – good train or boat connections to Vienna.
