100 years after Klimt’s first stay at the lake “The Artist Trail – Klimt on the Attersee” invites you to follow the tracks of the grand Viennese art nouveau painter.

This tour can be tailored to suit a small group or individuals approx. 10.

This region is extremely beautiful. There is also plenty of good walking or cycling as well – optional.

Between 1900 and 1916 Klimt spent numerous summer holidays at Lake Attersee. Famous for his allegories as well as portraits of the ladies. Klimt discovered landscape painting quite lately. Amongst the popular paintings of Klimt today there are more than 50 landscape paintings, most of them originate from the summer holidays at lake Attersee.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Private Transfer in morning from Salzburg to Seewalchen at Lake Attersee (your driver brings your luggage to Hotel Föttinger in Steinbach where you have the first overnight).

Meet your guide in Seewalchen and start your guided tour along Gustav Klimt Theme Hiking Path. 

“Take a walk on the tracks of great artists, who lived and where on visit in Steinbach and Weissenbach. Gustav Mahler, Friedrich Gulda, Franz von Schönthan, Chalotte Wolter, Hedwig Bleibtreu, Gustav Klimt – all of them where inspired by the Attersee and its fascinating surroundings.
At this 2,5 km long and easily walkable loop-trail are presentation boards with interesting information.”

After your guided tour and some free time take the public bus to Steinbach at Lake Attersee. Right next to the hotel Föttinger is the small composing cottage of Gustav Mahler – it can be visited.

Day 2: Private transfer to the famous World Heritage Village Hallstatt. You can do a tour with an audio guide or you find your own routes through the impressive, very photogenic village.

Overnight in Hallstatt famous for its good food

Day 3:  We recommend visiting the viewing platform 5 fingers at mountain Krippenstein and perhaps the Ice Caves. Or you make a guided tour through the Saltmines in Hallstatt.

Day 4: Today you can visit the Emperor´s town Bad Ischl by public transport bus or train. Lots of sightseeing is waiting for you – for example: Emperor villa (Kaiservilla), Leharvilla (where the composer Franz Lehar lived), visit the Pfarrgasse with its shops and the famous confectionary/café Zauner,

Day 5: Private transfer from Hallstatt to St. Wolfgang. See the famous White Horse Inn, numerous excellent lake side restaurants, do some sketching.

We take a ride on the famous SchafbergBahn with spectacular views and walks at the top. Twice a week there are local brass bands concerts in the center of St. Wolfgang.

Day 6: Free day for cycling/walking or painting or, take a boat ride

From St. Wolfgang to St. Gilgen by bike – a flat cycling route, approximately 20 km.

This is optional – you can go by boat

We recommend to visit in St. Gilgen the “Malerkolonie (exhibition museum of local artists)” or the “Mozarthaus”.After a stroll through St. Gilgen take the boat back to St. Wolfgang

Day 7: Private Transfer from St. Wolfgang to Salzburg.
